Are pens and pencils gathering dust on your counters, coffee table or desk? It’s time to learn how to make a pencil holder using items you likely have in your home. The best part is that even the least crafty person can make a pencil holder that they can be proud of for years to come.
There are only three easy steps, but let’s first start with the materials you’ll need to get started:
- Toilet paper tube
- Glue stick or hot glue gun
- Buttons (optional)
- Patterned paper
And don’t worry if you don’t have a glue gun. You can use any strong adhesive glue as long as it holds well on the material.
How to Make a Pencil Holder
Step 1
The first step is to get everything situated and prepared for your pencil holder. You’ll want to:
Cut a 4” x 4” base of paper (used in step 2)
Glue the exterior paper on to the toilet paper tube
You can use staples or anything you wish to adhere the paper to the tube. This is the outside “decoration” of your pencil holder.
Step 2
Using your glue or glue gun, attach the base cut in step 1 to the bottom of your tube. The goal is to use the base to keep the pencils inside of the holder.
Step 3
The final step is to decorate the outside of the pencil holder. Some people choose to glue buttons on the outside, while others will draw or color the outside as they wish. The choice is yours when it comes to decorating the outside of your pencil holder.
Many people have issues with step two because the base paper may not be thick enough to counter the weight of the pencils. If this is the case, feel free to use a cardboard base, which is more durable and a little heavier. You can decorate the base with colored paper or designs, too, to make it appealing.
